Why Am I Here?

Do you ever wonder why God put you in a particular place… a job, church or social group? When I go out and speak I am often asked, “How did you end up at Open Door Mission?” I wish I could say…I felt a strong need to love and care for my fellow man, especially those that are so disfranchised. That sounds so much better than “I needed a job.” In my case, the “back story” is so very important than just needing a job.

I had lost my job, I asked Candace if she had a paying job…she said yes, I applied and got the job. Once I had the job, I informed God that volunteering at Open Door Mission was awesome, but not where wanted to work long term. I, in my arrogance, told God I would work at Open Door Mission for only a year. As always God had a better plan for me than I had for myself…I fell in love with the people, the place and the job. I was blessed beyond all measure. After over 16 years (and a variety of jobs) at Open Door Mission I find almost everyone feels that being at the Mission was God’s plan for their life. From staff to volunteers to guests, it was God’s plan for them to come to Open Door Mission. God’s words of truth in Jeremiah 29:11 (“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for”.) ring true every day in the lives of those at Open Door Mission.
