It may have been muddy, sure there was a forecast of rain, but did that stop over 600 volunteers from several different churches converging at the Open Door Mission campus today, to work on various projects that saved Open Door Mission and it’s staff thousands of hours of labor? NO WAY!!!!
The 5th annual Step Out and Serve event was today, and it was amazing to see busload after busload of red t-shirt clad men, women and children stream into the Garland Thompson Men’s Center chapel for a quick orientation, then get to work in the name of the Lord.
Perhaps the most fun project of all was a carnival and cookout provided by Westside Church, featuring over 30 carnival games, including a dunk tank, giant inflatable slide and bouncy houses, face painting, cotton candy and snow cones… you name it. There was even live christian music!
Other projects tackled by these wonderful volunteers included sorting clothes, washing the Open Door Mission’s fleet vehicles inside and out, yard work outside the current Lydia House and Family New Life Recovery wings, preparing Christmas Bells cut outs for the upcoming holiday season, DEEP CLEANING of many high traffic areas throughout campus, and preparing over 900 sack lunches and delivering them on the first ever SUNDAY Streets of Omaha outreach.
Over 2,000 families in the community were invited to shop and the Timberlake Outreach Center and attend the free family carnival. People started arriving as early as 8:00 a.m., but the doors to the Timberlake Outreach Center did not open until 12:30! That is how great the need is for those who are homeless and hungry in the Omaha area!
There is simply no way to thank these wonderful volunteers enough. It is a true testimony to the power of God and the hearts of Open Door Mission’s awesome supporters and volunteers. You all truly made a difference and helped to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty!
