Legal and Illegal

Did you know in all 50 states there are laws against leaving animals outside in the cold weather (hot weather also). It is either a misdemeanor or felony. It can be just a fine or include jail time. As of now neither Nebraska nor Omaha have laws or regulations concerning the welfare of the homeless in cold weather. There are, however, regulations or laws concerning pets outside in cold weather.

I love animals, but I love people more. Where is our humanity when it is inhumane leave a dog outside in the cold, but okay to have homeless sleeping on the streets? The Open Door Mission, like the other shelters in the area is in overflow conditions for families and singles. We continue to take people in, even as space fills up with floor mats. Just image there is actually a waiting list for families to sleep on a mat in a communal room. During this cold time of the year, the Open Door Mission can use sheets, blankets, quilts and sleeping bags. Any extra coats, sweaters, and sweatshirts you aren’t using are appreciated also. Any cold weather gear is needed…hats, scarves, gloves and especially children’s mittens. Please, please think about donating your gently used cold weather items so others maybe warm.
