Always With Us….Always An Opportunity

Today marks my two month anniversary since joining the staff at the Open Door Mission.  Like any new beginning, I’ve had to adjust to new routines, a new culture and even a new drive to work.  Every day on my drive in to work, I pass a billboard that reads:

That “Love Thy Neighbor” thing…

I meant that.

– God”

I believe He means it.  Do you?

Since my arrival on staff at the mission, I’ve often pondered a question.  Will there ever come a time where there is no poor?  Jesus seems to answer the question when He says that the poor will always be with us (Matthew 26:11; Mark 14:7).  Several other Scriptures talk of the existence of the poor and how we should treat them.  However, I wrestle with Deuteronomy 15:4-5 which says:  there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today.”

Reconciling these passages leads me to the conclusion that our failure to fully follow God’s commands (disobedience) results in the poor being with us.  If only we, as community, can follow Jesus’ lead in Matthew 22:36-40, when He outlines the first and second greatest commands are to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” and to “love your neighbor as yourself”.  I believe we’d have a changed world.

Do you see the opportunity?  As disheartening as it is that man has failed and the poor are present, it presents an opportunity for us as a community to be a part of God’s redemptive plan.  God has a special place in His heart for the poor and He invites us to participate in a plan to provide for the physical needs and, in turn, share the Gospel.  In other words, love the Lord your God and love your neighbor.

I have been so impacted by the passion and commitment of the volunteers, donors and staff working together and dedicated to meeting the needs of the poor and homeless men, women and children in our community.  Every day, the campus at the Open Door Mission is buzzing with activity as volunteers and staff focuses on loving our neighbor!

Are you a part of what is going on at the Open Door Mission?  If not, don’t miss this opportunity to take a look around and see where you can be a part.  Find out how you can get involved at or call us for a tour.  We’d love to show you around.  The need is great, but so is the fruit that is produced in the lives of everyone touched at the Open Door Mission.  See you soon!
