I served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1978 and in the reserves from 1987 to 1990.
During the Vietnam War, I was aboard a rocket launcher that cruised up and down the
coasts firing at the North Vietnamese. We couldn't actually see who we were shooting at
behind the walls of green along the riverbanks, so Piper Cubs flew above us and told
us where to shoot and if we hit our targets.
I've had trouble sleeping since 1969; I guess because of the rockets. The only way to
really sleep was to get high on alcohol and weed. But I never got addicted.
After I left the service, I never had trouble getting good jobs. But when both my
parents got sick and needed full-time care, I quit my job of seven years to take care of
them. My father passed away in 2003 and my mother died months later. They'd been married
60 years and I think she really missed him.
Anyway, I expected to inherit the house, but family problems put an end to that.
That's why I had to come to Open Door Mission.
I'm still surprised I'm here! If it hadn't been for this mission, Id have nowhere to
go. I just never envisioned needing this kind of help.
The people here have touched me. They encouraged me to get on the Journey to Work programs , counseled me through tough issues and helped me get back where
I should be in a good church and closer to the Lord.
My military attitude helps me through each day and I think of the programs as boot
camp. I work each day picking up donations and most of the people I meet are real nice.
I've got good rapport with most of the guys on the programs , too.
I have a good work ethic and I'm in good shape for an old man! When I get
transportation, Ill be ready to get a job and leave here. This time I'm trusting God
for my future. Lewis
