“I was ready to give up but I knew that if I came to Open Door Mission I would find God and actually find Hope,” stated Reuben.
The first time Reuben found himself without hope, he was a very young child. His mother no longer wanted him and he was placed into a foster home. Moving from home to home, Reuben found himself longing for a family.
He was introduced to drugs and alcohol at a young age and continued through his teenage years. He worked hard all week just to drink on the weekend until he passed out. Soon he found himself not able find or keep a job due to his addiction. “I was drinking and using drugs so much, I did not even want to get up in the morning to go to work”
At the age of 27, Reuben realized, “I was tired of living this way and I knew I needed to get my head on straight.” He got married and had two wonderful children and life was going great. At the age of 37, he was introduced to cocaine and slowly started going downhill. He finally found himself divorced, without his children, alone and without any hope.
Reuben’s breaking point was when he lost the person closest to him, his older brother, to a drug overdose. After his brother’s death, he knew he needed to change his life. He started searching for help.
Rueben had lost hope when he stepped into the Garland Thompson Men’s Center in 2010. “I was ready to give up but I knew that if I came to Open Door Mission I would find God and actually find hope”.
As Reuben started the New Life Recovery Program, he soon found that Jesus loved him and he finally found a new hope in Christ. It was not an easy road, but the more Reuben studied the Word of God, he knew things would get better. “The more I got into God’s Word, the more I learned what God was trying to teach me. It gave me the hope and confidence to rely on him”
Reuben graduated from the program in October. Today he remains clean and sober, active in his Church, and working on his GED. Rueben’s goal is to help others find what he found. He states, “The New Life Program can help people find hope and gain the confidence they need to continue their walk with Christ.”
